Deadlock Deadman Danny Guide: Flight, Heat and Surviving the Landing
Learn Danny’s flight controls, Strix Salvo marks and heat management. Understand mixed damage, dive upgrades and when Close The Deal is worth the risk.

You fly across the street, spot an inviting target and decide to hover a little longer. A moment later, the jetpack overheats. Danny crashes down, the enemy steps aside, and your impressive entrance becomes a self-stun. That is a very plausible first encounter with this hero.
Danny’s flight, shooting and landing all feed into one another. Height provides a firing angle, while heat limits how long you can use it. Start with short, deliberate attacks: take an angle, cash in a mark, decide whether to commit, and know where you intend to land.
This guide reflects the mechanics checked on October 24, 2026, including Danny’s first balance update after release. The suggested sequences are practical approaches, not guaranteed combos.
Get the controls straight first
Action names matter more than familiar keys, especially if you use custom bindings.
- Ability: Strix Salvo, first ability The control or condition to remember: Hold and drag your aim to choose the missile line’s angle.
- Ability: Chimera Mk1, second ability The control or condition to remember: Hold the Mantle action shown in its tooltip to fly. During overheating, press the second ability to dive early.
- Ability: Jettison Fuel, third ability The control or condition to remember: Damage helps vent heat; the finishing blast pushes Danny backward.
- Ability: Close The Deal, fourth ability The control or condition to remember: Grab an enemy for a shared ascent and crash. Danny also takes damage.
Do not expect a single tap of the second ability to perform normal flight. Holding the flight action and ordering an early dive are different inputs. Check both in practice before queueing, particularly after changing your controls.
Heat puts a deadline on your airborne position
Chimera Mk1 builds heat while you fly. Reaching the limit starts overheating: after a short delay, Danny dives and creates a landing explosion that launches him and nearby enemies. If it misses enemy heroes, he stuns himself.
After overheating, the jetpack remains unavailable until it cools completely. That makes landing location a serious commitment. Before the crash, you have vertical mobility. Afterward, you may be walking out under enemy fire.
Pick the end of the flight before taking off. A useful landing gives you a corner to retreat behind or a teammate to retreat toward. An exposed spot behind the enemy is much less forgiving when your team cannot follow. A nearly dead target does not automatically make that landing safe.
Slows still affect Danny in the air. If your approach suddenly becomes sluggish, stop planning around your original movement speed. Shorten the attack while you can still choose a direction instead of demanding one more second from an overheating pack.
Use Strix Salvo to prepare a shot
Strix Salvo plants missiles along a line. They explode after a delay or when they detect an enemy, dealing Spirit damage and applying a mark. A charged weapon shot against a marked enemy consumes a mark for additional Spirit damage and a fading slow.
That requires two connections: the salvo must catch the target, and the charged shot must follow. Scattering missiles somewhere near a fight is not the complete sequence. Shape the line around a likely route: a narrow passage, an escape path or the space an enemy already occupies while fighting your teammate.
One practical approach is to make the opponent choose between the missile line and an awkward retreat. Prepare your charged shot while they decide. If the mark lands, take the short trade. If they retreat behind cover, you do not always need to fly after them; forcing that movement may already give your team the opening it wanted.
The weapon hit and the mark’s extra damage are separate components. A rocket’s appearance does not tell you which resistance will answer every part of the exchange. The Bullet and Spirit damage guide explains that distinction in more detail.
Jettison Fuel needs something to hit
Jettison Fuel sprays Bullet damage and reduces the target’s Bullet Resistance. Its finishing blast deals Spirit damage and pushes Danny backward. Dealing damage with the spray helps vent the jetpack.
Two practical consequences follow. Spraying empty space is not equivalent to hitting a target when you need cooling. Also, the direction of the finishing knockback matters. With a safe corner behind you, it can help create distance; with an open street behind you, it can expose you to more guns.
You do not have to spend the ability at the start of every approach. Saving it for an enemy who moves closer can make contact easier. However, waiting for the perfect spray while your heat climbs is also a decision with a cost. Do not let a hypothetical opportunity force an uncontrolled landing.
Upgrades change the cost of a dive
Chimera Mk1’s first upgrade improves cooling while grounded. Its second provides healing and removes self-damage when the landing explosion hits a hero. The third rewards a hero hit with more damage and reduced jetpack recovery time.
Before the second upgrade, a successful landing is not automatically a heal. After buying it, an empty landing still does not satisfy the condition. Keep that distinction in mind against opponents who save movement to leave your landing area.
Spend ability points around the fights you actually take. If you consistently land marks from useful angles, improving Strix Salvo supports that plan. If you repeatedly end up grounded without a follow-up, review your landing decisions and Chimera availability first. More damage cannot make your team arrive at a position it could never reach.
Close The Deal still needs an exit plan
The ultimate carries Danny and his grabbed target upward before the crash. It deals Spirit damage during the descent and on impact, with increased damage against enemies below half health. Danny also takes damage himself.
That makes a weakened opponent attractive, but it does not make the ability a guaranteed execution. Resistances, healing and nearby teammates still matter. Check your own health before grabbing someone: what will you have left for the fight after landing?
Picture a fight near a passage. Your teammate forces an enemy backward, Strix Salvo marks them, and your charged shot connects. A grab can now finish that shared focus. Flying over the entire enemy team to grab a full-health backliner creates a very different landing, even though the buttons are identical.
After a rough match, use a replay to review one failed landing. Find the last moment when a safer exit was still available. That gives you something concrete to change next game.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Danny stun himself after crashing?
An overheat landing that fails to hit an enemy hero causes a self-stun. Hitting ordinary units does not meet the hero-hit requirement. Check where the opponent can move before committing to the dive.
Can I fly again immediately after overheating?
The jetpack must cool completely. Do not treat another flight as an unconditional escape. Upgrades can improve recovery after a successful hero hit, but you still need to track Chimera’s state.
Does any weapon shot consume a Strix Salvo mark?
The mark requires a charged shot against the marked enemy. An ordinary shot is not an equivalent substitute in that sequence: the extra Spirit damage and fading slow depend on meeting the mark’s condition.
Is Jettison Fuel entirely Bullet damage?
No. The spray deals Bullet damage, while the finishing blast deals Spirit damage. Its Bullet Resistance reduction benefits the Bullet portion of your offense; it does not make every component the same damage type.
Should every attack end with Close The Deal?
No. A mark, a charged shot and a safe withdrawal can be enough. Commit to the grab when you understand the target, the landing position and who can help you continue the fight afterward.
