Where Are Deadlock Replays Saved?
Find the Deadlock replay folder, locate a .dem by Match ID, check alternative save paths, and back up downloaded replays without losing your originals.

Downloaded Deadlock replays are usually saved inside the game’s installation folder, under game/citadel/replays. On Windows, if Steam and Deadlock are installed in the default location, the full path is:
Look for a .dem file named after the match’s ID. If you installed the game on another drive, let Steam open the right folder for you.
Open the replay folder through Steam
- 1. Open your Steam Library and right-click Deadlock.
- 2. Select Manage → Browse local files.
- 3. From the installation folder, open game → citadel → replays.
This avoids guessing which Steam library holds the game. The drive letter and folders before Deadlock can vary; start from the installation Steam opens.
If you only want to watch a match, you don’t need to find its file first. Use the in-game replay controls covered in how to watch and download a Deadlock replay.
Find the file for a particular match
Take the Match ID from the match details in Deadlock, then look for that number in the replay filename:
<MatchID> is a placeholder for the actual number. Use the match’s ID, not your Steam ID.
If you have a lot of files, search the folder for that number. Sorting by modification date can help find a recent download, but the file’s timestamp isn’t necessarily when the match was played. The ID is the better way to identify it.
On Windows, enable File name extensions in File Explorer if the endings are hidden. That makes it easier to distinguish a .dem from a .dem.partial.
What if the usual folder is empty?
A match appearing in your history doesn’t mean you have downloaded its replay. Check that the download and unpacking actually finished before looking for a usable local file.
If you already tried downloading it, check these locations inside the installation folder:
game/citadel/replaysThe usual location; start here.game/citadel_<language>/replaysIf you use a non-English client and the usual folder is empty. Language-related path bugs can put files here.game/citadel/addons/replaysIf mods changed the game’s search paths and redirected replay downloads.
<language> represents a language suffix, not a folder name to type literally. The alternative paths won’t exist in every installation, and not every mod changes where replays go.
Still nothing? Search within the Deadlock installation folder for the Match ID, including its subfolders. You can also look for .dem and .dem.partial files. If an error shows a specific file path, check that location first.
You don’t need to create every folder in the table or move files between them just to locate a replay.
There’s no replays folder at all
First confirm you opened the current installation through Steam and actually attempted a replay download. An absent folder doesn’t prove your match is lost; it also doesn’t mean a copy exists elsewhere on your PC.
Creating an empty folder won’t retrieve the match data. If Deadlock says the replay isn’t available, follow the Replay Not Ready for Download guide.
There’s only a .dem.partial file
That isn’t proof of a ready-to-play demo. Downloading or unpacking may not have finished successfully. If the game is still processing it, let it finish before copying files.
If processing ended with an error, use the Partial Decompression Failure guide. Don’t simply rename .dem.partial to .dem: changing the name doesn’t unpack or repair its contents.
Back up a replay you want to keep
Once the replay downloads and plays successfully, close Deadlock and copy its .dem to a folder outside the game installation. Leave the original in place so you don’t disrupt the game’s existing copy.
Keep the Match ID in the filename. For a collection, put copies into folders labelled by match date and add a short note with the moment’s timestamp. That saves you opening several demos to find one fight later.
In our experience, server replays are usually available to download for around 10 days after a match. That’s an approximate guide, not a Valve guarantee. It concerns the server copy, not an expiry date on a file you’ve already saved.
A backup preserves the data, but future game updates can still affect playback. For a moment you really want to keep, record it as a video while the replay works.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn’t my replay in Downloads or Videos?
The in-game replay download normally goes into the game’s installation directory. A screen recording has its own save location, set by the recording app.
Is a .dem file an MP4 video?
No. It contains replay data for a compatible game client or replay tool. Renaming it to .mp4 won’t turn it into a video.
Can I send the file to a friend?
Yes. Send a copy of the completed .dem, but remember that your friend needs a compatible client or replay tool to use it. If you just want to show a highlight, a video is easier to watch.
Can I delete downloaded replays to free space?
Close the game first and back up anything you want to keep. Removing a local replay means you may need to download it again to watch it—and the server may no longer have it. Don’t rely on the Match ID alone as your backup.
