How to Get Deadlock Access in 2026 and Invite a Friend

Get into Deadlock through a Steam playtest invite, understand the waiting time, and check missing invitations, Limited Accounts and party-invite confusion.

How to Get Deadlock Access in 2026 and Invite a Friend

You watch the new update, open Steam, and find a message saying the game has not been released. Meanwhile, your friends are already playing. It feels as though you missed an essential registration step.

As of October 2, 2026, Deadlock access still comes through invitations from friends participating in the playtest. A major update and a busy player population do not make it publicly available. Steam still lists the full release date as unannounced.

You need someone with access to send a playtest invitation to your Steam account through Deadlock. Adding the game to your wishlist does not replace that step.

What to ask your friend to do

Specify that you need a playtest invitation, not a party invitation. They are different actions. Being invited to a lobby does not automatically add a game you cannot yet access to your account.

First, become Steam friends and confirm the correct profile. This matters if you use multiple accounts or share a familiar display name with someone else.

The person with access should launch Deadlock, open Invite your Friends, select you from their Steam friends and submit the invitation. The current interface text labels successful submission Successfully submitted.

That means the request was sent. It does not necessarily mean access has already been granted: the invitation can arrive later.

A clear request is enough: “Could you invite me to the Deadlock playtest through Invite your Friends? This is my Steam name.” It saves more time than sending five ordinary party invites in a row.

Where to find your invitation

Check Steam notifications first: in the desktop client, use the bell in the upper-right corner. Find the playtest invitation and follow its prompts. You can also check the email address associated with the account, including spam, but do not wait only for an email: the invitation may already be waiting in Steam.

When the invitation is available, accept it through Steam and check your Library. Once access is granted, install Deadlock normally through the client.

If the game is missing, confirm that you are signed into the account the sender selected. Check Library search and filters as well. Restarting the client may refresh the display, but it does not turn an unprocessed request into approved access.

Do not judge your personal access solely from the public store page. Its future-release message can coexist with an account being admitted to the playtest.

How long does a Deadlock invite take?

The client’s timing guidance says invitations are typically sent within one to two days, with some taking longer. That is an estimate, not a promise to grant access at exactly 48 hours.

No notification after ten minutes does not establish that something went wrong. First confirm that your friend reached the submission confirmation rather than merely adding you on Steam.

If substantially more time passes, recheck the account, invitation status and any restriction messages. Finding the exact message your friend sees is more useful than collecting duplicate submissions. There is no verified rule that more people inviting you makes admission faster.

What the invitation errors mean

If submission fails, ask your friend for the exact message. The following errors are defined in the client, with a different response for each. An error appearing in this list does not establish that its restriction currently applies to your account.

  • You are not friends with the selected user What to check: Whether the Steam friend request was accepted and the correct profile was selected
  • You have not been friends long enough What to check: The friendship-duration requirement; the message does not specify a universal number of hours
  • The player already has access What to check: The recipient’s Library and invitations on the correct account
  • Limited Steam user What to check: The account’s limited status is preventing playtest eligibility
  • Unable to communicate with the Deadlock network What to check: The request did not submit normally; try again after connectivity recovers

If submission returns Limited Steam user, the game is rejecting the invitation because of the Steam account’s limited status. Asking the sender to press the button more often does not address that reason. Without that message, do not assume limited status explains a delayed invitation.

Check the Steam account’s limited status and Steam’s requirements for removing it. That is separate from buying the game or paying someone for a key. A payment to an outside seller is not an established way to remove an account restriction.

What if none of your friends play?

You do not need to know a Valve developer or a streamer. You need an admitted playtester who has the invitation feature available. Start with people you already game with: someone may have received access months ago without playing recently.

If you do not know an eligible sender, there is no verified guaranteed-access shortcut through wishlisting alone. A wishlist follows the game; it does not substitute for the current invitation process.

The sending process selects a Steam friend within the game interface. It does not require you to give someone your password or Steam Guard code. Buying a “beta slot” from a stranger is not part of this process either.

Once you are in, do not worry about Ranked immediately

Try the tutorial and experiment with abilities in the Sandbox after installation. Even if you are comfortable with shooters, movement, items and changing hero strength over a match take some adjustment.

Standard is available for learning normal matches. Ranked comes with later progression requirements, including wins on multiple heroes. A locked Ranked button does not mean you received an incomplete invitation; Ranked eligibility is a separate matter.

If the trailer looked excellent but your first match stutters, start with what to check for FPS drops. For the context behind the current discussion of the city and upcoming characters, read our City Never Sleeps overview.

At that point, the invitation has done its job. The next mystery is how “one quick match” managed to consume the evening.

Frequently asked questions

Has Deadlock released for everyone?

No. As checked on October 2, 2026, Steam still describes early development and access through playtester invitations. A full release date has not been announced.

Do I need to buy a Deadlock key?

An existing playtester sends an in-game invitation, which you accept through Steam. A third-party key purchase is not required for that process.

My friend pressed Invite, but I do not have the game. What now?

Confirm that it was a playtest invitation, that submission succeeded, and that they selected the right account. Check Steam notifications and email. The client’s typical timing is one to two days, sometimes longer.

Can a Limited Steam Account get access?

The client has a specific rejection for limited Steam users. If you receive that message, address the account status first; repeated invitations alone do not remove the stated obstacle.

Does a party code or lobby invitation grant access?

No. You need access to the game first. Party invitations are for playing together once the participants can already launch Deadlock.
